Dear OVA Families,

We want to share an update regarding OVA’s school leadership. Dr. Jordan Dennis has made the difficult decision to leave Oxford Community Schools. We want to thank Dr. Dennis for his leadership and contributions during his time as principal. His commitment to our unique educational model has helped countless students thrive, and his positive impact will be felt for years to come. We wish him all the best in his next chapter.

Mrs. Janet Schell is returning as principal of Oxford Virtual Academy, serving in a more direct role supporting our students and staff.

As always, we remain committed to providing the highest quality education and support for all students. If you have any questions regarding this update, please feel free to reach out to Janet Schell, Executive Director of Innovative and Alternative Programs, at Janet.Schell@oxfordschools.org.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Oxford Virtual Academy.

Sincerely,
Oxford Virtual Academy

Yesterday, Oxford Virtual Academy, in partnership with Legacy Hybrid, hosted a meaningful Veterans Day event. Guests had the privilege of hearing from two inspiring keynote speakers and honored veterans: Lt. Col. Shane Childers (USAF) and Corporal Elijah Thomas (Marines).

A heartfelt thank-you to Legacy Hybrid Directors Jeanne Hotchkiss and Misty Martin for helping make this event so special for everyone involved.

Happy Veterans Day, and thank you to all who have served and continue to serve our country! 🇺🇸

Dear Oxford Community Schools Families,

We understand that some families may have concerns about food insecurity. For additional support if needed, we have compiled a list of local food assistance resources. You can access the full list on our website here: Food Assistance Resources.

We also want to remind families that every student is encouraged to eat a free breakfast and lunch at school each day to ensure they have access to nutritious meals.

If your family is in need and unable to access food, please reach out to a Family School Liaison (FSL) or any school staff member. We are here to help connect you with the right resources.

Sincerely,
Oxford Community Schools

Dear OVA/Quo Vadis Parents and Guardians,

We wanted to provide you with information regarding law enforcement assistance at our location earlier today. Oxford’s Gaggle monitoring system alerted staff to a concerning statement made by a student on a district device. OVA and Quo Vadis staff members responded immediately in accordance with district safety procedures and contacted law enforcement to assist.

The situation was contained quickly, and there is no threat to students or staff. A formal threat assessment is underway, and the student involved will not be returning to school while the investigation continues. As a reminder, the threat assessment team includes a School Resource Officer, Administrator, and Mental Health Professional.

We understand that situations like this can be unsettling. Please know that our safety protocols worked as designed. The well-being of our students and staff remains our highest priority. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in maintaining a safe learning environment.

Dear Oxford Families,

I want to take a moment to share something important with you. We’ve put together a very short video (just 2½ minutes) that explains what will be on the ballot this November. I implore you to watch it. It has even helped me, as the district superintendent, to better understand the proposals, and I hope it will help you feel informed as well.

Absentee voting has already started, and Election Day is just around the corner on November 4. If you find the video helpful, please consider forwarding it to friends and family who live in Oxford, or sharing it on social media if you’re comfortable doing so.

For additional information including Frequently Asked Questions, please visit https://oxfordschools.org/millage. Thank you for taking a few minutes to be informed; it truly makes a difference!

The State of Michigan has adopted a new state budget that includes continued funding for free breakfast and lunch for all students this school year.

We still encourage all families to complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application each year. The information provided through these applications helps determine eligibility for various supports and funding that benefit both families and schools.

Benefits of Completing the Application include:

  • Free or Reduced-Price Meals: Direct financial assistance to families if the universal free meal program is not renewed in the future.

  • Discounts on Educational Activities: Possible cost reductions for AP exams, field trips, and after-school programs.

  • Other Student and Household Support: Access to programs that provide food assistance, school supplies, and holiday support.

  • Increased Funding for Schools: Additional funding through programs such as Title I, which supports all students.

  • Eligibility for Other Programs: The application can help determine eligibility for other state and federally funded programs.

Families can complete the application online or request a paper copy from their school office.

In accordance with Michigan’s Safe Storage Laws (MCL 28.429MCL 380.1313a, and MCL 380.1313b), schools are required to share information on the safe storage of firearms. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has provided resources for distribution through the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).

The following resources are available for your review:
